Tracking the Kinematically Optimal Trajectories by Mobile Manipulators

Abstract

This paper addresses the kinematically optimal control problem of the mobile manipulators. Dynamic equations of the mobile manipulator are assumed to be uncertain. Moreover, globally unbounded disturbances are allowed to act on the mobile manipulator when tracking the trajectory by the end-effector. A computationally simple class of the Jacobian transpose control algorithms is proposed for the end-effector trajectory tracking. Such controllers apply a new non-singular Terminal Sliding Mode (TSM) manifold defined by a non-linear integral equality of the second order with respect to the task space tracking error. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, the proposed Jacobian transpose control schemes are proved to be finite-time stable provided that some well-founded assumptions are fulfilled during the mobile manipulator movement. The performance of the proposed control strategies is illustrated through computer simulations for a mobile manipulator that attains trajectory tracking by the end-effector in a two-dimensional task space and simultaneously minimises some objective function.

Towards Autonomous Planetary Exploration

Abstract

Planetary exploration poses many challenges for a robot system: From weight and size constraints to extraterrestrial environment conditions, which constrain the suitable sensors and actuators. As the distance to other planets introduces a significant communication delay, the efficient operation of a robot system requires a high level of autonomy. In this work, we present our Lightweight Rover Unit (LRU), a small and agile rover prototype that we designed for the challenges of planetary exploration. Its locomotion system with individually steered wheels allows for high maneuverability in rough terrain and stereo cameras as its main sensors ensure the applicability to space missions. We implemented software components for self-localization in GPS-denied environments, autonomous exploration and mapping as well as computer vision, planning and control modules for the autonomous localization, pickup and assembly of objects with its manipulator. Additional high-level mission control components facilitate both autonomous behavior and remote monitoring of the system state over a delayed communication link. We successfully demonstrated the autonomous capabilities of our LRU at the SpaceBotCamp challenge, a national robotics contest with focus on autonomous planetary exploration. A robot had to autonomously explore an unknown Moon-like rough terrain, locate and collect two objects and assemble them after transport to a third object – which the LRU did on its first try, in half of the time and fully autonomously. The next milestone for our ongoing LRU development is an upcoming planetary exploration analogue mission to perform scientific experiments at a Moon analogue site located on a volcano.

Closing the Loop – Predictive Lifted Newton Trajectory Tracking Algorithm

Abstract

This paper introduces a predictive closed-loop trajectory tracking algorithm for nonlinear control systems that combines the Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach with the task priority Lifted Newton method. The optimal control problem within MPC is replaced by the open-loop trajectory tracking problem formulated as a constrained motion planning problem. Constraints reflect the distance in the task space between the system current output and the desired trajectory. The original constrained motion planning problem is replaced by an unconstrained one addressed in an extended control system representation, and solved with the task priority version of the Lifted Newton method. All other steps of the MPC scheme remains unchanged. Performance of the closed-loop predictive Lifted Newton trajectory tracking algorithm has been demonstrated with series of computer simulations for the kinematic car type platform.

Employing Natural Terrain Semantics in Motion Planning for a Multi-Legged Robot

Abstract

This paper considers motion planning for a six-legged walking robot in rough terrain, considering both the geometry of the terrain and its semantic labeling. The semantic labels allow the robot to distinguish between different types of surfaces it can walk on, and identify areas that cannot be negotiated due to their physical nature. The proposed environment map provides to the planner information about the shape of the terrain, and the terrain class labels. Such labels as "wall" and "plant" denote areas that have to be avoided, whereas other labels, "grass", "sand", "concrete", etc. represent negotiable areas of different properties. We test popular classification algorithms: Support Vector Machine and Random Trees in the task of producing proper terrain labeling from RGB-D data acquired by the robot. The motion planner uses the A algorithm to guide the RRT-Connect method, which yields detailed motion plans for the multi-d.o.f. legged robot. As the A planner takes into account the terrain semantic labels, the robot avoids areas which are potentially risky and chooses paths crossing mostly the preferred terrain types. We report experimental results that show the ability of the new approach to avoid areas that are considered risky for legged locomotion.

The Variable Fate of Ag and TiO 2 Nanoparticles in Natural Soil Solutions—Sorption of Organic Matter and Nanoparticle Stability

Abstract

Engineered nanoparticles (NP) like Ag and TiO2 offer unique properties for various applications. Thus, the entry of the NP in soil environments is expected to increase in the future due to their growing industrial use. To avoid potential hazards due to these anthropogenic products, NP behavior in the environment should be well understood. In natural soil solutions, we investigated NOM adsorption onto Ag and TiO2 NP and its influence on NP colloidal stability. Therefore, we extracted soil solutions from a floodplain soil (Fluvisol) and a farmland soil (Cambisol) differing in NOM quality and inorganic ion concentration. We measured the amount of adsorbed organic carbon as well as changes in aromaticity and molecular weight of NOM upon adsorption onto NP. Additionally, the size and zeta potential of NP in both soil solutions were investigated. We observed that the highly hydrophilic NOM of floodplain soil solution rich in inorganic ions strongly adsorbed to Ag but not to TiO2 NP. Instead, sorption to TiO2 NP was observed for the more hydrophobic NOM of the farmland soil with low ionic strength which did not sorb to Ag NP. These differences had a strong effect on NP stability, leading to Ag NP destabilization in case of floodplain soil solution and TiO2 NP stabilization in the presence of farmland soil solution. Our results point out the necessity of studies in more complex systems and suppose that oxic and metallic NP might show very different fate depending on the environment they are exposed to.

Rehabilitation following lumbar fusion surgery (REFS) a randomised controlled feasibility study

Abstract

Purpose

Following lumbar fusion surgery (LFS), 40% of patients are unsure/dissatisfied with their outcome. A prospective, single-centre, randomised, controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the feasibility (including clinical and economic impact) of a theoretically informed rehabilitation programme following LFS (REFS).

Methods

REFS was informed by an explicit theoretical framework and consisted of 10 consecutive weekly group rehabilitation sessions (education, low-tech cardiovascular, limb and spine strengthening exercises, and peer support). Participants were randomised to REFS or 'usual care.' Primary feasibility outcomes included recruitment and engagement. Secondary outcomes, collected preoperatively and 3, 6, and 12  months postoperatively, comprised the Oswestry disability index, European Quality of Life 5 dimensions score, pain self-efficacy questionnaire, hospital anxiety and depression scale and the aggregated functional performance time. Economic impact was evaluated with the Client Services Receipt Inventory.

Results

Fifty-two of 58 eligible participants were recruited, and engagement with REFS was > 95%. REFS participants achieved a clinically meaningful reduction in unadjusted mean short-term disability (− 13.27 ± 13.46), which was not observed in the 'usual care' group (− 2.42 ± 12.33). This was maintained in the longer term (− 14.72% ± 13.34 vs − 7.57 ± 13.91). Multilevel regression analyses, adjusted for body mass index, baseline depression, and smoking status reported a statistically significant short-term improvement in disability (p = 0.014) and pain self-efficacy (p = 0.007). REFS costs £275 per participant.

Conclusions

Results suggest that REFS is feasible and potentially affordable for delivery in the National Health Service. It is associated with a clinically meaningful impact. A multicentre randomised controlled study to further elucidate these results is warranted.

The use of cisplatin plus doxorubicin or paclitaxel in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for stage IIIC or IV epithelial ovarian cancer: a comparative study

Abstract

Purpose

Our main aim is to analyze the survival results in women operated on for advanced ovarian cancer with two different HIPEC regimens (cisplatin plus doxorubicin versus paclitaxel).

Patients and methods

A prospective cohort of patients with stage IIIC or IV epithelial ovarian cancer operated on with cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC, from October-2008 to February-2016, was retrospectively analyzed. The two drugs used, cisplatin/doxorubicin (Group A) and paclitaxel (Group B), were compared.

Results

Forty-one patients were treated with cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC; 19 patients (46%) were in Group A and 22 (54%) were in Group B. The extent of peritoneal disease was comparable between groups (Peritoneal Cancer Index of 10 in Group A versus PCI of 12.5 in Group B). There were no differences in morbidity between groups, with a severe morbidity (Dindo–Clavien III or IV) of 36.8% versus 27.3%, respectively. There was no postoperative mortality. Median follow-up was 39 months. Median overall survival was 79 months. Overall survival at 3 years in Group A was 66% versus 82.9% in Group B (p = 0.248). Incomplete cytoreduction (macroscopic residual tumour after surgery) was identified as the only independent factor that influenced overall survival (HR 12.30, 95% CI 1.28–118.33, p = 0.03). The cytostatic used in HIPEC had no influence in overall survival.

Conclusion

The cytostatic used in HIPEC did not have a negative effect in the prognosis of patients with advanced ovarian cancer.

Woman to Woman: Implementation of a Cervical Cancer Education Training Program for Grenadian Lay Health Advisors

Abstract

The reduction in cervical cancer (CC) in developed countries, due mainly to Pap testing, has not filtered down to Caribbean countries including Grenada despite accessible screening. This is attributed to a lack of knowledge and low screening. Researchers in low resource settings successfully trained lay health advisors (LHAs), using theory-based, culturally relevant interventions to reverse this trend. The use of LHAs in Grenada was not documented in the literature; therefore, the purpose of this study was to implement and evaluate a culturally relevant curriculum in an effort to educate Grenadian LHAs on CC. Using convenience sampling, 8 Grenadian women were recruited from the parishes with the highest rates of CC. They participated in Woman to Woman (W2W), a 2-day CC, and human papilloma virus (HPV) prevention education program facilitated by local content experts. W2W was adapted from an evidence-based curriculum and tailored for the Grenadian context. Training consisted of modules on CC and HPV. Knowledge of LHAs was measured pre- and post-intervention. Summative evaluation was assessed using a focus group discussion. There was a significant increase in CC knowledge among LHA post-training (p < 0.05) and LHAs had positive opinions about the intervention. They had an enhanced sense of self-efficacy and valued feeling part of a team. The W2W results indicated that an evidence-based and culturally tailored educational intervention has the potential for significant gains in CC and HPV knowledge. Future research will evaluate the LHA-led CC and HPV educational intervention in the community setting.

Experience with keratoprosthesis at a tertiary eye care center: A report from North-East India

Aim: To evaluate the preservation of visual acuity (VA) and the development of complications after keratoprosthesis (KPro) implantation (Boston KPro and Auro KPro) over a long follow-up period at a tertiary eye center in North-East India. Materials and Methods: This was a single-center retrospective case series. The records of all patients who underwent KPro implantation between March 2013 and August 2017 were analyzed. The preoperative characteristics, postoperative outcomes, complications, its management, and retention rates were reviewed. Results: Ten cases were included in the study. Preoperative VA ranged from counting finger close to face to hand movement close to face. The cause for KPro implantation included multiple graft failures (5 eyes, 50&#37;), chemical injury (3 eyes, 30&#37;), and Stevens&#8211;Johnson syndrome (2 eyes, 20&#37;). Mean follow-up duration was 26.9 months (range, 12&#8211;54 months). At 1-month follow-up, eight patients had a vision &#8805;6/60 (80&#37;). At 1-year follow-up, eight patients had a VA &#8805;6/24. Glaucoma was newly diagnosed in three eyes (30&#37;); progression was noted in one eye (10&#37;). Glaucoma drainage device was implanted in one eye (10&#37;). Retroprosthetic membrane formed in seven eyes (70&#37;) and one eye (10&#37;) underwent KPro replacement. The initial KPro was retained in nine eyes (90&#37;). Conclusions: KPro is an effective and a viable option for treating end-stage corneal diseases for salvaging vision. A significant number of patients lose vision following KPro implantation due to glaucoma and corneal melts. Our study reiterates the importance of regular and long-term follow-up and a comprehensive team approach for management of postoperative complications. 


Clinico-microbial profile of fungal keratitis and detection of Pythium insidiosum: A pilot study

Background: Infectious keratitis is a leading cause of blindness, more so in developing countries where rates of corneal ulceration are much more than those of industrialized countries. The organisms responsible for infectious keratitis differ regionally, with bacterial organisms more common in temperate climates and fungal organisms more common in tropical climates. A large fraction of infectious corneal ulcers that are referred to tertiary care centers in South India is fungal in etiology. Methods: Parameters studied were age, sex, residential district, occupation, risk factor, clinical presentation, microscopic examination of the sample, fungal culture, and Pythium insidiosum. Results: History of trauma was observed in half the cases. History of contact lens usage or diabetes mellitus was not seen in any case. Hypopyon was seen in 50&#37; of the cases of which 33.33&#37; were immobile. KOH preparation for all the samples was negative. Of the 15 samples sent for culture, 12 grew no fungus and 2 were contaminated. One fungus grew and was identified as Aspergillus terreus. P. insidiosum could not be isolated. 


Perspective about blindness and vision 2020-national program for control of blindness among students of different disciplines and general population

Objectives: To study the awareness about causes of blindness, Eye donation, NPCB and Vision 2020 among students of Medical, Paramedical, Engineering College and General Public in a semi-urban centre. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted at the Velammal Medical College Hospital in 4 months duration, which recruited around 2000 individuals from general public, students from various disciplines. A semi structured Questionnaire was presented and responses were recorded. They were analysed statistically. Results: Almost half of the respondents were not aware about existence of NPCB programme and awareness about existence of programme is high among Nursing Students (96.92&#37;). Awareness about causes of blindness is significantly higher among Medical students (99.23&#37;).Awareness about eye donation is only about 74.5&#37;. Awareness about various aspects of Childhood eye diseases is about 70-80&#37;. Conclusion: There is an improper utilisation of NPCB programme services due to lack of awareness about the same. Some of the strategies that the students were willing to participate were widespread awareness programmes in media and outreach programmes at gross root level. So we should utilise the resources and potential of student community in educating the public. 


Ophthalmological and medical long-term follow-up of patients with central retinal vein occlusion

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ophthalmological and medical aspects of patients with a history of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) after a long-term follow-up. Design: This was a retrospective case&#8211;control study. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven consecutive CRVO patients (29 eyes) were enrolled between April 2011 and April 2012, each participant underwent a comprehensive and detailed interview and also they had an ophthalmic examination with investigations such as color retinography and optical coherence tomography. Finally, medical and cardiologic examinations, including the laboratory analysis of blood specimens, were performed to all participants. Results: Our data confirm the significant association of CRVO with age (P &#61; 0.025) and with ischemia (P &#61; 0.022) and also treatment with low-molecular-weight heparin. Main risk factors of developing CRVO were as follows: hypertension (59.0&#37;), dyslipidemia (48.0&#37;), blood diseases (15.0&#37;), and high body mass index (15.0&#37;). There was no any significant association between all of the thrombophilic factors (laboratory parameters) and visual acuity (VA), except IgG anticardiolipin antibodies (P &#61; 0.004). Two patients had myocardial infarction during the follow-up period. There was a parallel reduction of VA and foveal thickness during a long follow-up period. Conclusions: VA and central foveal thickness decreased during the follow-up period probably because of a progressive atrophy of the central retinal area, which suggest an early treatment of the macular edema prior an unfavorable evolution of the clinical situation, only one laboratory parameter had association with VA, small minority of patients developed serious cardiovascular events during the follow-up period after CRVO; these data suggest no overall association of CRVO with cardiovascular events.

Pediatric cataracts pose multiple challenges in terms of management and postoperative rehabilitation. Difficulties in obtaining accurate measurements for axial length and keratometry are encountered due to poor cooperation in children and instrumentation errors. There exist multiple formulae for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation, which are based on various factors and have varying degrees of accuracy. Children exhibit a tendency for myopic shift due to the anatomical differences from adult eyes and due to the growth of eyeball, as a result of which they require undercorrection, when IOL implantation is planned.

Scleral-fixated intraocular lenses (SFIOLs) are important tools for an ophthalmologist when dealing with the eyes that have inadequate capsular support. Since the time of its introduction, SFIOLs and techniques for their implantation have seen many innovations. Initially, sutured SFIOLs were widely performed. In the last two decades, sutureless SFIOLs are gaining popularity. Both these methods and the different surgical techniques to perform them offer unique advantages to the surgeon. Therefore, careful consideration is to be given to the choice of technique and steps to be employed for a particular eye. In this article, we aim to provide an overview of the commonly used techniques in SFIOL surgery and provide certain surgical tips that may help the surgeon in the operating room.

In developing countries like India, cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is becoming common cause of visual impairment due to better neonatal care and advancement in technology. CVI is characterized by visual malfunction due to the retrochiasmal and visual association pathway pathology. The visual malfunction can present in any combination and any severity in the setting of developing brain functions. Higher centers damage may lead to cognitive dysfunction. Most common cause of CVI is hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, due to reduced blood flow in immature brain blood vessels in watershed zones. Early identification of impairment and early intervention help these children to achieve higher level of vision. Customized and integrated approach needed between ophthalmologist, paediatrician and other interventional professional. Counselling of parents also have very important role in the treatment.

Foveal simple hamartoma of retinal pigment epithelium

Congenital anomalies of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) are rare entities among which simple hamartoma of RPE is extremely rare. Majority of reported cases of congenital simple hamartoma were extrafoveal and patients were asymptomatic. These lesions may pose diagnostic challenge if not aware. Here, we present two cases of simple congenital hamartoma involving fovea presenting with diminished vision and also discuss the review of literature in brief.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ophthalmological and medical aspects of patients with a history of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) after a long-term follow-up. Design: This was a retrospective case–control study. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven consecutive CRVO patients (29 eyes) were enrolled between April 2011 and April 2012, each participant underwent a comprehensive and detailed interview and also they had an ophthalmic examination with investigations such as color retinography and optical coherence tomography. Finally, medical and cardiologic examinations, including the laboratory analysis of blood specimens, were performed to all participants. Results: Our data confirm the significant association of CRVO with age (P = 0.025) and with ischemia (P = 0.022) and also treatment with low-molecular-weight heparin. Main risk factors of developing CRVO were as follows: hypertension (59.0%), dyslipidemia (48.0%), blood diseases (15.0%), and high body mass index (15.0%). There was no any significant association between all of the thrombophilic factors (laboratory parameters) and visual acuity (VA), except IgG anticardiolipin antibodies (P = 0.004). Two patients had myocardial infarction during the follow-up period. There was a parallel reduction of VA and foveal thickness during a long follow-up period. Conclusions: VA and central foveal thickness decreased during the follow-up period probably because of a progressive atrophy of the central retinal area, which suggest an early treatment of the macular edema prior an unfavorable evolution of the clinical situation, only one laboratory parameter had association with VA, small minority of patients developed serious cardiovascular events during the follow-up period after CRVO; these data suggest no overall association of CRVO with cardiovascular events.

Pediatric cataracts pose multiple challenges in terms of management and postoperative rehabilitation. Difficulties in obtaining accurate measurements for axial length and keratometry are encountered due to poor cooperation in children and instrumentation errors. There exist multiple formulae for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation, which are based on various factors and have varying degrees of accuracy. Children exhibit a tendency for myopic shift due to the anatomical differences from adult eyes and due to the growth of eyeball, as a result of which they require undercorrection, when IOL implantation is planned.

Scleral-fixated intraocular lenses (SFIOLs) are important tools for an ophthalmologist when dealing with the eyes that have inadequate capsular support. Since the time of its introduction, SFIOLs and techniques for their implantation have seen many innovations. Initially, sutured SFIOLs were widely performed. In the last two decades, sutureless SFIOLs are gaining popularity. Both these methods and the different surgical techniques to perform them offer unique advantages to the surgeon. Therefore, careful consideration is to be given to the choice of technique and steps to be employed for a particular eye. In this article, we aim to provide an overview of the commonly used techniques in SFIOL surgery and provide certain surgical tips that may help the surgeon in the operating room.

In developing countries like India, cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is becoming common cause of visual impairment due to better neonatal care and advancement in technology. CVI is characterized by visual malfunction due to the retrochiasmal and visual association pathway pathology. The visual malfunction can present in any combination and any severity in the setting of developing brain functions. Higher centers damage may lead to cognitive dysfunction. Most common cause of CVI is hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, due to reduced blood flow in immature brain blood vessels in watershed zones. Early identification of impairment and early intervention help these children to achieve higher level of vision. Customized and integrated approach needed between ophthalmologist, paediatrician and other interventional professional. Counselling of parents also have very important role in the treatment.

Congenital anomalies of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) are rare entities among which simple hamartoma of RPE is extremely rare. Majority of reported cases of congenital simple hamartoma were extrafoveal and patients were asymptomatic. These lesions may pose diagnostic challenge if not aware. Here, we present two cases of simple congenital hamartoma involving fovea presenting with diminished vision and also discuss the review of literature in brief.

Scleral fixation of intraocular lens (SFIOL) is a challenge in eyes with opaque corneas. It is preferable to implant the IOL before performing penetrating keratoplasty. Most techniques described so far involve SFIOL following corneal trephination (open sky) which increases the risk of expulsive choroidal hemorrhage. Extraocular needle-guided haptic insertion technique involves extraocular docking of the IOL haptic into a bent 26-gauge needle followed by its exteriorization. Since this crucial step of SFIOL surgery is completely extraocular, this method can be used to safely place an SFIOL in a well-formed globe even before corneal trephination. Use of a silicone stopper over the leading haptic prevents intraocular rebound of the haptic.

This is a report of a very rare case of congenital rubella syndrome with congenital sensorineural hearing loss, rubella retinopathy, and congenital heart disease with patent ductus arteriosus. After the introduction of the rubella vaccine in 1969, the number of babies born with congenital rubella is much less and rare. Not all the babies born with congenital rubella have the classical triad. Hence, our patient who has all the features of the classical triad is an extremely rare one. The baby underwent surgery for patent ductus arteriosus and cochlear implant procedure for sensorineural hearing loss. She is now under follow-up with us for pigmentary retinopathy.

Papilledema is swelling of the optic nerve head, a sign of increased intracranial pressure. It can have underlying life-threatening etiologies such as intracranial space-occupying lesions or meningitis. However, pseudopapilledema is elevation of the optic disc secondary to local underlying structural conditions. Distinguishing between papilledema and pseudopapilledema is needed to avoid subjecting the patient to unnecessary tests and anxiety associated with it. We report a case of an 18-year-old male who presented to us with the clinical suspicion of disc edema. Simple noninvasive investigations such as red-free fundus photography and ultrasound B-scan aided us to diagnose it as a case of pseudopapilledema-optic nerve head drusen. Thus, a high index of suspicion along with the ancillary tests is helpful in differentiating pseudopapilledema from true papilledema.

A 60-year-old male presented with defective vision and low intraocular pressure (IOP) in the left eye (LE) following cataract surgery combined with aqueous drainage implant which was done elsewhere 2 months ago. In the right eye (RE), he presented with primary angle closure glaucoma and Grade 2 nuclear sclerosis. In LE, scleral patch graft with loose sutures with shallow anterior chamber and nonvalved aqueous drainage implant with fundus features suggestive of hypotony maculopathy were noted. The patient underwent tight compression suturing of scleral patch graft with intracameral sodium hyaluronate injection for LE and clear corneal phacoemulsification with trabeculectomy with releasable sutures with Mitomycin-C 0.02% for RE. Postoperatively, visual acuity and IOP in LE were improved and in RE postoperative outcome was successful with no complications.

A dermoid is an overgrowth of normal, noncancerous tissue in an abnormal location. Dermoids occur all over the body. The one in and around the eye usually comprised skin, hair, and/or fat. Our patient had an unusual presentation of dermoid in caruncle of the left eye. The mass was excised and histology confirmed the diagnosis. The patient followed up postoperatively and was uneventful.

Intraocular cilium is a very rare intraocular foreign body. We report a middle-aged female patient who presented with a cilium in the anterior chamber of the right eye with iritis, following an injury with a stick. In view of anterior chamber reaction, the eyelash was removed. Postoperatively, the iritis resolved in 2 weeks with periocular and topical steroids.
